Natural gas on the agenda at 2010 APIA Convention

Discussions and presentations at the 2010 Australian Pipeline Industry Association Convention continued the Association’s focus on raising the profile of natural gas as the sensible fuel in a carbon constrained future, according to Chief Executive Cheryl Cartwright.

The 2010 APIA Convention was held between 11 and 14 September in Darwin, Northern Territory.

“Australia has about 300 years’ supply of natural gas. It’s the cleanest burning fossil fuel and it will support renewable energy supplies into the future,” Ms Cartwright said at the Convention.

Australia’s pipeline industry is about to see a multi-billion dollar expansion of the country’s gas transmission infrastructure thanks to upcoming development of LNG and coal seam gas (CSG) projects.

Ms Cartwright said that the construction of new high-pressure gas pipelines would provide the main impetus for the increased industry activity.

“Over the next decade, we are looking at a possible $10 billion being spent on high-pressure gas pipelines infrastructure, especially with the continued dramatic development of Queensland’s CSG industry,” Ms Cartwright said.

“That also means additional jobs and the need to ensure we continue with our valuable research into safe and efficient transport of the country’s vast gas resources.”

Ms Cartwright said that the industry is ready for the challenge of providing new infrastructure, and ready to work with governments at all levels to ensure progress in CSG development.

“We will also continue with APIA’s focus on raising the profile of natural gas as the sensible alternative fuel in a carbon-constrained future,” she said.

APIA predicts that the gas industry will undergo “massive growth” in the next 20 years, not only because of LNG development but also because of the need to respond to climate change issues. Ms Cartwright said that during this time frame, the pipeline industry expects to meet a growing demand for quality water infrastructure through the development of desalination plants and the replacement of open irrigation channels with pipelines.
